The Ghaf (prosopis cineraria) is a multipurpose tree that survives the harshest of climates and is a solution to desertification. It can be seen growing in low sand dunes and gravel plains, with roots penetrating as deep as 30m to find access to water. If you see a healthy tree, you will find water!
Intensive farming and overgrazing, as well as construction development has depleted its numbers in the UAE greatly. There is, however, an ever increasing conservation effort in place to safe guard this amazing tree and re-introduce it to not only into the wild, but as a indigenous, hardy and far less water consuming alternative to other trees in urban areas.
The following have kindly donated one or more Ghaf trees to offset our carbon emissions for the drive around the world. If you too want to donate a Ghaf tree, please visit our partners website: Goumbook – Your Green Connection.

Our passion is the great outdoors. We love to discover new places, but unfortunately we have encountered all too often the destructive effects of plastic pollution in the most remote corners of the globe.
Thus the idea came to combine the two – a great journey with a great cause. PlasticNotSoFantastic was born…

[...] Give a Ghaf [...]
Hi!!!
I saw your link from the Rotaract Jumeirah newsletter and I was wondering how I can contribute to this great project. I am a student at St.John’s University in NYC,NY and if you could let me know how I could help, please do so!
Thank You and congrats on this fantastic project!
Sincerely,
Catherine N.
Dear Catherine,
thank-you, that is very kind. Great to hear that the message is spreading.
We would greatly appreciate your support in helping to get the word out – talk to family, friends, Rotarians / Rotaractors and anybody who wants to listen about plastic pollution. Like our Facebook page, follow us on Twitter and maybe, if you can, tell us about the issues you are facing in NY.
We will keep in touch, and once we pass by yours, it would be pleasure to meet and maybe even give a presentation if you think that would be appropriate.
Yours in Rotary,
David
